Liposuction: Understand Your Expectations

There has been a lot of confusion about liposuction throughout the years.  As one of the most misunderstood cosmetic procedures, it is important for people to truly understand it in order to decide if it is right for them.  They can then make the decision based on the facts.  By knowing the facts, people will then know what liposuction can and cannot do.

Anytime you decide to get surgery, you need to have realistic expectations.  When you have realistic expectations, you are then able to evaluate your body and the procedure and decide if it is right for you.

First, it is necessary to understand the procedure is not meant as a replacement for diet and exercise.  Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery option.  Instead, it is meant to remove problem areas of fat.

Obese people should never get liposuction.  If someone is obese, they can look at one of the weight loss surgeries available, such as gastric bypass.  If they choose to get liposuction, they will be putting themselves at great risk for complications.

Liposuction is meant for someone who has localized areas of fat.  That means it is to be used for someone who has fat in certain areas of the body, not over the entire body.  If someone has areas of fat in their abdomen, for example, they could turn to the procedure.  However, if someone had fat located over their entire body, they would need to use a weight loss method.

At the same time, the procedure can be used to remove fat from multiple areas of the body.  For example, if someone had problem areas located on their abdomen, arms and neck, they could use the procedure.  However if someone was in bad shape and overweight over their entire body, they could not use the procedure.

It is also important to understand the procedure is permanent, as long as the patient takes care of their body after the surgery.  That means they will need to stick to diet and exercise in order to maintain the results of the surgery.  If people fail to stay in shape after the surgery, the fat cells will actually come back.  Therefore, it is necessary they exercise and eat right so they will not have to get the procedure done again.  It is only permanent when people take care of their bodies.

Liposuction is not for everyone.  That is because the surgery is not a method of weight loss.  Instead, it is meant as a means to remove localized fat deposits.  Someone who is obese should consider another option.  It should never be considered to be a replacement for diet and exercise, and it will only be successful in the long term for those who are willing to live a life that is healthy.

Those who are interested in the procedure are encouraged to speak with a plastic surgeon so they can find out about their individual risks and expectations. They can then make an informed decision in regards to the procedure.
