Liposuction Recovery

Recovery is part of every liposuction procedure.  No matter which type of procedure you choose, you will have to go through a recovery process.  It is best to prepare yourself for the process so you will not have any surprises.

While recovery is different for each individual, there are still things that are common for liposuction recovery in general.  Become aware of those things so your expectations will be in the right place.

First, it is important to know there will be some swelling and bruising after the procedure.  This is normal as liposuction is an invasive procedure.  Because of the bruising and swelling, you will not be able to notice your results right away.  You will need to wait until the bruising and swelling is gone before you can really see the results of you surgery.

After the bruising and swelling go away, you will feel better and you will also be able to see your results.  At that point the recovery process is typically complete and you are able to go back to life as normal.

However, sometimes recovery does not go as smoothly. There are patients who do not simply have normal bruising and swelling and then feel better.  There are some complications that can occur, and if they do you need to consult your plastic surgeon.  He will then be able to deal with the complications in order to minimize the risk.

If you experience shortness of breath or chest pains, you will need to call your doctor.  He will then be able to evaluate your problems and make changes so you will be able to go through a good recovery.  This is not something to ignore.  You need to contact your surgeon immediately so he will be able to let you know if it is a serious problem or if it is normal.

Also, if the bruising and swelling fails to go away after several weeks, you will need to call your doctor.  He will be able to check and see if there are problems that need to be dealt with.  In most cases, bruises and swelling will start to dissipate within days and is gone within weeks.  If you are not on schedule with that, you need to find out why.

You also need to let your doctor know if you are in pain for several weeks after the procedure.  While some pain is normal after surgery, it should not persist for weeks.  If it does, you need to find out why.  You will only be able to do that by visiting your surgeon.

It is always important to put your recovery at the forefront of a procedure.  Take the time to recover in the right way.  Do not push yourself and work toward the goal of feeling better, one day at a time.  If there is anything that does not feel right in regards to your recovery, do not hesitate to contact your surgeon.  You will then be able to make sure recovery is going as it should.
